How Does My Team Bring Out The Best In Me?

There's a subtle but profound interplay between leaders and their teams. It's like a dance where each partner influences the other's steps. Your answers to this question gives you clues as to where the gaps are in your leadership and in getting the best out of your team, too.

If this question proves difficult, think about it like this: How would an ideal team bring out the best in you?

Your answers might be:

  • They would hold me accountable for getting stuff done

  • They would respect my time and boundaries

  • They follow my direction and vision

  • etc.

Looking at your list, which of your points is true for your real team? What do your answers and the gaps say about the team and your leadership (or as a member of your team)?

Adding to your answers with high-performing team examples (and structure courtesy of Patrick Lencioni's model of "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team"):

  1. They let me be my true, authentic self: Trust is the cornerstone of a high-performing team. When my team trusts me, I feel free to be myself. In this space of authenticity, I can truly shine and lead effectively.

  2. They provide critical feedback: Healthy conflict isn't something to fear; it's something to embrace. My team isn't afraid to challenge me or offer constructive criticism. It's through these interactions that I grow and evolve as a leader.

  3. They align with my goals and expectations: Clarity is key. When my team understands our collective goals and commits to them wholeheartedly, it's easier for me to steer us toward success. We're all rowing in the same direction, and that's powerful.

  4. They hold me accountable for my actions: Accountability breeds excellence. I'm motivated to deliver my best work in an environment where we all hold each other to high standards. It's a two-way street, and I appreciate the push.

  5. They focus on delivering great results: At the end of the day, it's all about results. When my team prioritises outcomes over individual agendas, we achieve remarkable things together. It's this collective drive that propels us forward.

Reflecting on these points, you can see strengths and growth areas for yourself and within the team dynamics. Together, you'll continue this dance, influencing each other's steps and bringing out the best in one another.
